Oregon Festival of American Music 2010: Kiss Me Kate
Location: Silva Hall
Presented by The Shedd
Combine William Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew with Cole Porter's music and lyrics and get an instant classic! This is a play-within-a-play where each cast member's on-stage life is complicated by what is happening offstage. Musical numbers include "Why Can't You Behave?" "So In Love Am I," "Were Thine That Special Face," "Too Darn Hot," "Brush Up Your Shakespeare," and "Always True to You In My Fashion."
Fun, melodious and sophisticated, Kiss Me, Kate is universally acknowledged to be Porter's finest work. It ran 1,077 performances on Broadway during its original run and won five Tonys, including Best Musical (the first in that category), Best Author of a Musical (for Samuel & Bela Spewack's brilliant book), and Best Composer & Lyricist honors for Porter.
Directed by Ron Daum (who last graced OFAM with his sparkling rendering of Rodgers & Hart's 1937 Babes In Arms, our all-new production has a stellar cast led by longtime OFAM favorites, Shirley Andress and Bill Hulings as the embattled Katharine and Petruchio (onstage) and Lilli Vanessi and Fred Graham (off). It will be a literary romp to remember!
