This month’s host is Steve La Riccia.  Steve is the gallery coordinator for the New Zone Gallery, organizer and promoter of the popular "Salon des Refusés" show for the past 19 years, an artist and published author. He will curate this year’s transformed show, "Salon du Peuple" (Salon of the People) at the New Zone Gallery during the Eugene Celebration.  Co-hosting the ArtWalk with Steve will be his daughter, musician and award winning artist/extraordinaire, Mia Sage La Riccia.

Details about the First Friday ArtWalk hosted stops for August 6th:

#1 MECCA Gallery - 449 Willamette St

To kick off the First Friday ArtWalk, MECCA Gallery introduces the show “Art Saves Lives” by Rev. Yao Feng Shakya aka Sadmonk.  Sadmonk is a Zen Buddhist Priest and artist.  His work, painted in the Zen brush painting style, is created with hand-ground sumi-ink and watercolors on recycled cardboard.  He elaborates, "Chan/Zen painting is an ancient art form started in China by Buddhist monks and priests with the invention of ink, paper, and bamboo brush. Traditionally it is used for meditation. By splashing ink onto the paper, the process of enlightenment was brought forth.  By becoming one with the subject and object the painter awakens to their true inner nature and realizes that all is one…Painting is not only my meditation but a way of life. I believe that art saves lives, it did mine. " Sadmonk sells his artwork and teaches Zen all over the world through the internet, as well as teaching Zen Painting classes locally to all ages.

#2 Imagine Gallery - 35 E 8th Ave

Imagine Gallery presents “Illumination” by Hans Fuson.  In this show, much of Hans work focuses on light boxes.  He explains, “As a self-trained artist, photographer and collaborator who has continued to experiment with various mediums for twenty years, I've been recently exploring my passion for lighting, color and simple form, which has manifested into light boxes.  Freehand pen-work (drawing) is the foundation of my design style.  The presentation of high-contrast, abstract imagery triggers our imagination and allows perception and interpretation to play a larger role, as an extension of the piece itself.  My attention for detail, curiosity about how light travels through a certain medium, as well as the creation of atmosphere in a room with colored light, will continue to inspire these and future projects.  I'm drawn to ways in which we can continue to experience life from new perspectives and explore the unknown.   Working with photography, photo-manipulation, drawing and illuminated art, allows me to do just that.”

#3 Studio West - 245 W 8th Ave

Studio West announces the opening of “So Romantic,” a collection of works by Portland based painter, Grant Hottle.  Hottle builds believable spaces that reshuffle our expectations in a way akin to dreaming or being hypnotized.  Gravity can be denied.  Straight lines wobble and threaten to bend. The studio acts as a site for experimentation and a point of departure, where perspectival interiors merge with unexpected leaps into remembered or observed phenomena and conventional space mashes with flattened abstraction and stylistic fancy. “These are stages for unseen painted events.”  Artwork by Edgar Sanchez Cumbas, Conrad Williams, Erik Eiserling, Guido Gerlitz and Jeff Ballard is also on view. Studio West will continue their live glassblowing demonstrations, viewable directly from the main gallery floor, every Friday and Saturday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

#4 Ink Thirsty - 281 W 8th Ave

Can video games be art? Eugene artist Richard Hofmeier is debuting "Cart Life," a video game portraying the trials and tribulations of four street vendors in a town similar to Eugene.  Ink Thirsty will feature the arcade cabinet built for the game as well as other interactive art by Hofmeier. To accompany the release of Cart Life, Ink Thirsty will feature street vendor-themed artwork by Sean Äaberg, Jenny Kuglin, and others. Street food will also be served on the spot by Eugene's favorite food cart, The Nosh Pit.

#5 Food for Lane County - 270 West 8th Ave

Food for Lane County is celebrating its 25th year and honoring its founder with an art commission to be installed in The Dining Room, its downtown meal site located between Lincoln and Charnelton Streets.  “Caroline’s Corner,” a mixed media portrait highlighting the many programs established by the visionary force of founder Caroline Fringle, will be a work in progress during the August ArtWalk. Artist Alison McNair says the work cannot be complete without the community participating in its creation. She states, “By glazing a small ceramic fruit or vegetable that will be embedded into the overall design of the work, the community will have an opportunity to offer a little piece of honor and respect to Caroline’s legacy.”

Since receiving its first Cultural Art Grant in 2001, the Dining Room has worked with artists to create an inviting atmosphere of community hospitality. Murals, art shows, music performances and holiday craft nights give the staff, volunteers, and their nightly guests a dining experience with dignity.  Artists Frank Moro, Paul Rey, Made Marcoe and Seline Dugan are among the contributing artists to this remarkable environment.

Oregon Festival of American Music 2010: Kiss Me Kate

Location: Silva Hall

Presented by The Shedd

Kiss Me Kate at the Hult CenterCombine William Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew with Cole Porter's music and lyrics and get an instant classic! This is a play-within-a-play where each cast member's on-stage life is complicated by what is happening offstage. Musical numbers include "Why Can't You Behave?" "So In Love Am I," "Were Thine That Special Face," "Too Darn Hot," "Brush Up Your Shakespeare," and "Always True to You In My Fashion."

Fun, melodious and sophisticated, Kiss Me, Kate is universally acknowledged to be Porter's finest work. It ran 1,077 performances on Broadway during its original run and won five Tonys, including Best Musical (the first in that category), Best Author of a Musical (for Samuel & Bela Spewack's brilliant book), and Best Composer & Lyricist honors for Porter.
Directed by Ron Daum (who last graced OFAM with his sparkling rendering of Rodgers & Hart's 1937 Babes In Arms, our all-new production has a stellar cast led by longtime OFAM favorites, Shirley Andress and Bill Hulings as the embattled Katharine and Petruchio (onstage) and Lilli Vanessi and Fred Graham (off). It will be a literary romp to remember!
